Maybe the girl should have chosen something looser to wear than her tight denim mini-skirt. Maybe the girl needs to go back to her dojo for further instruction. Maybe the girl needs to sign up for karate lessons at her local dojo.

Whatever the problem, have fun watching this girl make a wonderfully, high kick and fall hard on her, um, beautiful backside.

Maybe it has something to do with Nigeria’s national hero George Ashiru, silver medalist at the 4th All Africa Games in 1987, Team Manager of the 2008 Olympics, Seventh Degree Black Belt International Master Instructor, first time ever in Africa, and International Referee Class A, inductee to the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Hall of Fame, President of Nigeria Black Belt Taekowndo College, and newly elected 7th President of World Taekwondo Federation Member National Association (NMA).

Whatever has caused it, Taekwondo has seen a phenominal growth rate in popularity in Nigeria; nearly every private school in every major city of Nigeria has taken up taekwondo as one of the school sports. Potential champions are emerging out of universities and polytech institutes. Armed and para-military services have employed athletes in this sport. State sports councils have taken to paying athletes to play for them. The growth has been so prolific and so fast the Federation running into problems.

Many top stars are retiring from the sport leaving a gaping hole in numbers of qualified instructors; they need to fill in the positions with new talent. The Federation has a funding problem in building enough facilities to meet the demands of the growing interest. They need to manage data for long-term planning; before now there was little need for a database of active players and practitioners.

The Federation plans to register all officials and players, their qualifications, and ensure they receive adequate insurance. They plan to update coaching and referee education to ensure all meet adequate International standards.

George Ashiru is working hard to solve the multitude of growing problems while maintaining the growing national enthusiasm and support.

An article appeared in Black Belt magazine back in 1968 featuring the father of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, who was 85-years-old at the time, and still practicing the martial art of Aikido, bringing down to the mat young men stronger than himself. The magazine tried to get some straight answers from the O-Sensei about the art of Aikido and his role in it.

At the time Morihei Ueshiba, affectionately called O-Sensei, had just received the crowning victory of his illustrious career as he had been the guest speaker to the opening of the brand new 3-story Aikido world headquarters building in Japan. The newspaper men of the time had become hardened to PT Barnum-like acts meant to amaze, but deceive. So, when they watched O-Sensei toss young men down, they started to look for the catch, the mirrors in the wings so to speak. They had not yet learned how O-Sensei was the real thing.

It certainly didn’t help their lack of belief when all their questions were answered in mysterious, yet humorous, ways. When O-Sensei was asked when he established Aikido, he answered, “The day I was born.” His son quickly answered the first dojo was set up in 1931.

When asked about the meaning of Aikido, O-Sensei replied, “It is the way to reconcile the world and make human beings one family.”

When asked how he pulls an opponent down, O-Sensei remarked, “If he’s going to pull you, then let him pull. Don’t pull against him; pull in unison with him.”

Apparently, Aikido is something that has to be experienced, and not something that can give pat answers. It’s a shame one of the newspapermen didn’t offer to go on the mat with O-Sensei. Not only would it prove that this was the real deal, but it would teach him a bit more respect for this elderly man. (Not that any were behaving disrespectfully.)

As for the new headquarters, who could not be impressed? For the 75 years prior to the opening of the new building, O-Sensei’s headquarters had been in a ramshackle 75-mat dojo. The new headquarters contains a 130-mat dojo with two smaller 40-mat rooms.

At the time there were some 300 practitioners worldwide, but as Aikido was still fairly new, those who had made high level grades and could qualify as instructors were few in number. Therefore, private classes were limited. The higher level classes contained at least 15 students at 5,000 yen ($14) per month. Remember that was 1968, when things cost considerably less than they do today. Compare the $14 per month to the general fee for beginners at $1 per month. Get the picture?

Ki was a part of regular instruction. An instructor would demonstrate one technique with one student, and the the other students would practice it with each other for about 5 minutes. Then another technique would be demonstrated, and so on.

To understand the rigors of becoming an instructor one needs to look at how to rise in the grades. A beginner starts at 5th grade and works up to first grade wearing a basic judo gi. Getting through the five grades takes one about a year and one-half to about two years. When the student gets promoted to shodan, he dons the black hakama skirt.

A battery of examinations were held the fourth Friday and Sunday of each month when students would try their best to attain at elevation to a higher degree within their grade. To assess them properly the students were grouped into categories of professionals (those who trained regularly) and amateurs (those who attended workshops regularly). Students had to demonstrate not only the physical side of Aikido, but the spiritual side.

28-year-old George Lee Willard of California had come to Japan to train in Aikido. Even with his black belt in karate, he found trying to learn how to win in Aikido a real challenge. He told reporters his goal was to one day take down O-Sensei. He knew he would need a quite a few years more of training to be able to succeed at that, and he believed that O-Sensei might actually live those many years, considering the great health of the 85-year-old man. Unfortunately for George and the world, Morihei Ueshiba would die the following year.

Morihei Ueshiba was a devoutly religious man. Many considered him equivalent to the highest priest in Japan. The spirit side of Aikido played an equal importance to the originator of the martial art. O-Sensei claimed that he did not derive Aikido from any other martial art, however, critics of the martial arts recognize that Aikido hip rotations are much like kendo, and other techniques very much like jujitsu. Yet, Morihei Ueshiba emphatically insisted the God inside of him emerged and created Aikido.

To properly adhere to the ki of Aikido one must be able to assimilate how physical movement is controlled by the mind. Ki enables one to sense danger coming, anticipate it, and overcome it. The ki produces a reaction so swift a camera can’t easily catch it. For this reason many believe that high a level of Aikido to be something of a developed sixth sense.

The high popularity and growing devotion to the physical and spiritual aspects that Aikido has since propagated is a testament to the practice and beliefs of its founding father.

Jason Sam of the Marshall Islands won the gold medal at the 2013 Pacific Mini Games. By knowing that he would face competitors who were all trained differently seemed to diffuse Jason’s nerves before the competition.

After getting through the first round Jason felt more confident, relaxed and strong. His final match put him against a stronger fighter from New Guinea who had just defeated Tahiti in the semi-final rounds. He knew he would have to change his game and move faster. He managed a head kick in the first three seconds of the round that was so quick the judges missed it. After a public outcry and review they awarded him his three points.

The cheering fans supported his confidence, and the intensity of winning the gold had a serious impact on him when he received a penalty. It was his stamina and physical training that kept Jason going against this competitor who barely flinched with each hit and kept coming back for more. In the end Jason won with his second hit to New Guinea’s head.

At the PMG award ceremony, the judges named Jason Sam the Outstanding Male Taekwondo Athlete of the tournament.

In Jesse’s opinion the “best” is what you love the most. And he loves, of course, karate!

He loves karate’s variety of styles and, therefore, adaptable. While it may be super hard to learn, once learned karate is super easy! It’s surprisingly safe, if you train the traditional way; the worst you might ever get is a bruise. It’s very effective if done correctly. Finally, karate is a beautiful thing. It’s about culture, language, history, philosophy, and people.

Wushu, an artform incorporating martial arts, dance, and acrobatics, is practiced by this school of small children in Kathmandu, Nepal. The artistry of the students are phenominal. The pictures shown have a wonderful artistry of their own.

These 5- to 6-year-old students can kick well over their own height, and train with swords, spears, and quarterstaffs. They are preparing for upcoming national and international games.

Developed in China after 1949, Wushu takes different elements from traditional fighting techniques of multiple practices. Communist leaders helped develop this art practice as a way to practice martial arts separately from any religious aspects.

In the first video a woman wins a friendly wrestling match with a man much larger around than her before a huge crowd of spectators at a fair or festival of some kind. She uses a duck under throw that happens to be a gracefully deceiving move.

In the second video a man challenges random people on the street to try and punch him in the face. Use of the intellect prevents them every time. His amazing speed at bobbing and weaving protects him every time. It’s fun to watch. (One man manages to get in one punch.)

The students of Udmurtia University in Russia arrived at Aikido class to find they would receive instruction that day from guest martial artist and international known actor Steven Seagal. The University thought to keep his visit a secret so the entire campus and media would show up. They wanted the experience for the students to be first and foremost an Aikido lesson.

Steven Seagal did allow students to get his autograph and take pictures with their favorite celebrity martial artist.

The Dean of the University department for Physical Training Aleksandr Alabuzhev said, “We are interested in Seagal first of all because he is a top class sportsman. There are around a dozen such Aikido experts in the world like Steven Seagal is. Attending his Aikido master class was not only a great honor for the university students and teachers, but was also a big experience in one’s professional sports career.”

What would you do if you were 3-years-old, had painfully stiff joints, and been told by a doctor that you suffered from juvenile arthritis and an immune deficiency disease? Probably go back to playing with your red fire truck and watching cartoons, right? Not so for Jake Frood.

After watching the movie The Karate Kid, Jake asked him mother if he could take karate lessons. She agreed and enrolled him at the National Martial Arts College in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Within months his weak little legs developed lots of strength.

In only two short years, not only did Jake reach his fifth birthday, but in spite of highly painful joints he achieved the level of a black belt. No five-year-old in the world has a black belt, let alone one with juvenile arthritis.

Standing three-feet tall, Jake received his black belt after a grueling two-mile rune and four hour martial arts test. Jake hopes to rise to instructor by his tenth birthday.

As for his health, with his weakened immune system Jake seems to catch every single little germ that comes around. His mother, a nurse, says, “Without his love for it he wouldn’t have had the determination to get through his illnesses.”

Lincoln Karate Clinic has been a wonderful school for Dean. It teaches more than the self-defense of karate: life skills, anti-bullying lessons, and character improvement. He says the school taught him self-discipline and respect at home and school.

Dean now works with 8- to 11-year-old students and helps organize karate parties.

Black Belt has invited Guillermo Gomez to demonstrate how to use aikido to stop a front choke attack. Gomez demonstrates concentrating on the opponent’s wrist, using a nikyo immobilaztion technique, pressure on the wrist, to cause the opponent to release his grip on your throat.

“[Nikyo] enables me to control the wrist,” Guillermo Gomez says, “after which I bend the elbow and use my hips and the rotation of my body to put more pressure on it.”

“This [sequence of aikido moves] works because I control the thumb,” Guillermo Gomez says.

He then employs a wrist lock to increase the pressure and force the attacker to the ground.

Once on the ground he shows how, if necessary, you can continue to keep the attacker down using pressure to the arm and elbow joint.

A licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, Paul Sweetow, teaches karate in Winnetka, Illinois. This 5th degree black belt sensei won a gold medal at the Cincinnati, Ohio Amateur Athletic Union National Karate Tournament on June 29. He studied karate in Japan for one year with Okinawan masters and learned to speak Japanese. He’s been learning karate since he was 15 years old.

Sweetow believes he walks the path of wellness and continuous improvement. When asked about how he teaches others to confront hopelessness he says to take one step in the right direction, and then continue. He likes to incorporate his karate instruction with psychotherapy. He’s helped transform the lives of many children.

When parents express how much happier their children have become since taking karate, he feels he has done his job well.
