The students of Udmurtia University in Russia arrived at Aikido class to find they would receive instruction that day from guest martial artist and international known actor Steven Seagal. The University thought to keep his visit a secret so the entire campus and media would show up. They wanted the experience for the students to be first and foremost an Aikido lesson.

Steven Seagal did allow students to get his autograph and take pictures with their favorite celebrity martial artist.

The Dean of the University department for Physical Training Aleksandr Alabuzhev said, “We are interested in Seagal first of all because he is a top class sportsman. There are around a dozen such Aikido experts in the world like Steven Seagal is. Attending his Aikido master class was not only a great honor for the university students and teachers, but was also a big experience in one’s professional sports career.”

Black Belt has invited Guillermo Gomez to demonstrate how to use aikido to stop a front choke attack. Gomez demonstrates concentrating on the opponent’s wrist, using a nikyo immobilaztion technique, pressure on the wrist, to cause the opponent to release his grip on your throat.

“[Nikyo] enables me to control the wrist,” Guillermo Gomez says, “after which I bend the elbow and use my hips and the rotation of my body to put more pressure on it.”

“This [sequence of aikido moves] works because I control the thumb,” Guillermo Gomez says.

He then employs a wrist lock to increase the pressure and force the attacker to the ground.

Once on the ground he shows how, if necessary, you can continue to keep the attacker down using pressure to the arm and elbow joint.

You will not believe your eyes! Is this video for real? Or a clever trick? You decide!

It comes from Japanese television that films a young Samarai expert cutting objects less than 6 mm wide. Isao Machii appears like an ordinary young man, but modest, and self assured. The challenges brought to him starts with his cutting vegetables so tiny and thin you wonder how he does it.

The part most unbelievable is his cutting through a moving bullet. That’s where you have to sit back and say, “Now, wait a minute. That only happens in Hollywood. This is baloney.” Or is it? Watch the intense concentration and obvious expert technique used by this young man. Is it real? What do you think?

If you can look past its few flaws, Out of the Shadows, the latest in TMNT gaming, packs lots of fun.

In the first five minutes of the game you will enjoy the nostalgia of the original movie’s soundtrack, and the recreation of the movements and unique personalities of each of the four turtles. The first few levels look and sound good, the jokes about pizza are fun. But after awhile the jokes get a little old, and the game becomes a little irritating as it becomes difficult to know which direction to head, and finding the answers works more on luck than skill.

The four heroes of New York take on the foot and a horde of evil robots. Reporter April O’Neal gets kidnapped and its up to the turtles to get her back safely. The game allows up to 4 players, and for the solo player, it’s fun to switch around to each of the turtles who wield different weapons and distinctly different personalities. Sometimes you just find yourself thoroughly outnumbered.

There are some basic puzzles, but you can always get out of it and start it over until you finally solve it. Too often your companions hang back and let you go it alone. The camera gets difficult to maneuver making the movements tricky. But for its low price, it’s not too bad a game.

Chris Cooper, comic book reviewer from Flickering Myth, approves of the new IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics villain series no. 6, “Hun.”

It seems that the villain Hun, the new leader of the Purple Dragons, has joined the City Fall war and is about to make life miserable for our four heroes-in-a-half-shell. Hun uses AA meetings, where he intends to turn his life around, a framing devise. Cooper wonders how the TMNT will deal with not only the physical threat, but the emotional as well.

Cooper believes Mark Henderson’s art work is good, but the drawing of the Hun on the cover far out does his drawings within. Cooper also wishes he could have seen more transformation of Hun’s character.

Cooper highly rates the entire Villains series overall. The stories are well written and add layers to the overall narrative.

Martial arts movies have inspired this blogger on AWMA and caused him to fall in love a lifetime with the sport and culture of the Far East. His favorite living star is Van Damme. But he also shows respect for Bruce Lee.

Van Damme’s first film Bloodsport “blew [him] away,” in his childhood. He has never seen anyone kick so high in his life as Van Damme. In fact, a little fun piece of trivia is that Van Damme won the part when he showed a producer he could kick by kicking over the producer’s head. The story is about the real life character Frank Dux who went to Hong Kong to compete in kumite, a brutal bare knuckle fight style, and won.

Bolo Yeung plays the nemisis in Bloodsport, and also played in Enter the Dragon with Bruce Lee. In a favorite scene in Enter the Dragon, Bolo’s character tries to imitate Bruce Lee (good luck!) by chopping a thick board in half. Bruce’s line, a favorite, is “Boards don’t hit back.”

In Bloodsport, Van Damme’s character is asked to break a break. After he does, Bolo’s character responds, “Very good, but brick don’t hit back.”

March 2012 edition of Black Belt named Tim Kennedy “The Most Dangerous Man in the World.” This continues to hold true today. His MMA record at that time was 14-3; today it is 16-3.

Tim Kennedy not only has had extensive training in karate, kickboxing, jiu jitsu, and wrestling, but also has extensive H2HC (hand-to-hand combat) training and experience. Tim has been through Army Basic Training, Airborne School, the Special Forces Qualification Course, served on a counterterrorism unit in Iraq, Army Rangers Training, completed the Modern Army Combatives Program (MACP) and the Special Operations Combative Program (SOCP). He now serves as a combatives instructor in the 7th special forces group, and he’s a staff sergeant in the Texas National Guard.

In this video, mixed martial arts expert Tim Kennedy demonstrates self-defense moves that work in both military and civilian life. His main goal is to provide space between himself and his attacker using head butts and hand moves.

“During the hundreds of combat missions I went on, I never saw a guy who didn’t have at least a long gun, a pistol and a knife,” Tim Kennedy explains regarding the role of H2HC in Special Forces missions. “[H2HC] gives guys the opportunity to make space so they can get to their tools: their gun, their knife, their cuffs and so on.”

In CQE or closed battle combat, you don’t always know where your enemy is going to be. It’s tough. Unlike a martial arts competition where you always know where your opponent is and you start off with space between each other so you can assess the opponent, in real life combat, your assailant is more likely to blind side you, come up from behind unexpectedly or from around a corner.

The idea is to quickly maneuver especially with serious damage to the assailant so you can create that space between you and he. Tim recommends using your helmet to head butt the assailant. You might just knock him out, it’s that thick and heavy. If not, between the head butts, palm shots, and knee kicks to the upper torso or elbow strikes, the main idea is to get back to a space, a certain distance between you and he, so you can get back to your tools, your weapons.

When he is able to get his opponent down on the ground, he strikes the opponent in order to give himself maximum mobility for any further H2HC combat or to subdue the opponent with his tools.

“You have to have a heads-up, prepared-for-anything martial art that’s fast, dynamic and dangerous,” Tim Kennedy says. “You have to be able to do damage and then get back to the important stuff. Recognizing that, Greg Thompson developed SOCP. Now every Special Forces member trains in it.”

Tim wants to go back to an Operational Detachment Alpha team as a shooter, but others (presumably his superiors) have told him he’s better off using his 20 years martial arts and military experience as a hand-to-hand combat instructor in the Special Forces because not very many people have that skill and knowledge.

The Sioux City martial arts community is working to help bullied children regain their power. They’re teaching a class called “Bully Proof” a new national program that teaches jiu-jitsu, and how to use leverage and technique rather than fist fighting. Bully Proof is designed to stop a bully, and to instill confidence and discipline, and how to diffuse a situation. Every Saturday morning, students of different ages and sizes put on their martial arts gis strapped shut with white belts and line up for jiu-jitsu training.

Ryan Johnson who runs the program wants kids to be able to defend themselves without having to break any school rules. With jiu-jitsu a child can learn to use locks and choke holds instead of injuring their assailant with punches and kicks.

“If you punch them in self-defense, they’re just going to go to the teacher and say you’re the bully,” said Johnson to his class. “Bullies are expert liars — don’t give them any excuse.”

Instilling confidence and discipline is an important part of the Bully Proof program.

“Bullies can see through false bravado,” Johnson said. “When a bully sees that you have confidence, that you’re not afraid anymore, it takes the fun out of it for them.”

Sioux City Schools received a figurative black eye back in 2011 when the international film “Bully” showed Sioux City’s East Middle School student Alex Libby being tormented by fellow students. The film also portrayed bullying incidents in other parts of the country and gained international acclaim for its harshly candid portrayal of the prolific problem in schools across the world. Since the airing of this film, Sioux City has created an intensive program to fight the problem called the Bully Prevention Community Coalition.

When SiouxFighter appeared before a meeting of the Coalition, it brought to many minds the image associated with SiouxFighter of violent battles from the 1990s and their bloody outcomes. However, SiouxFighter co-founder Nick Rogers, himself a professional fighter, assured the Coalition that SiouxFighter wants to take a stand against violence and show how mixed martial arts has changed, implementing new rules and weight limits, so that their athletes are no different than athletes in any other sport. They want to instill discipline and respect in their students, and to stop the bullying associated with their organization.

“We’re kind of the anti-violence, no fighting group,” chairwoman Sandy Nation responded. “But bullying is so much more than fighting, and ultimately, we invite anyone who has the same goals against bullying.”

One of the most important lessons of every martial arts class is respect. It’s the first thing a student learns to do: to bow with respect to their teacher and to their fellow students. With all the excitement over technique, martial arts students often forget the importance of respect.

“Respect comes before anything physical, before learning techniques,” said SiouxFighter’s Nick Rogers. “I think respect is lacking in society today. Respect for parents, elders, law enforcement and each other.”

Martial arts is now a respected professional sport, and mixed martial arts employs varieties of fighting styles including wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and boxing.

Back to the jiu-jitsu training at the Bully Proof program, students take time out from technique training to show respect to one another by listening to each other’s stories on how they have been bullied. They then hold a discussion on how each situation could have been handled better.

Martial arts practitioner and author Mark Hatmaker explains the importance of drill training. Drilling implies having it “‘drilled’ into your skull.” Training implies a train reaching its destination by keeping on its track. Drilling and training Hatmaker says, “are composed of the actual skill work needed to improve the technical expression of the combat art.”

He gives an example of the football linebacker. Linebackers don’t get big and strong simply by playing football. They get their bulk by weight-lifting and running and other auxiliary sports. Drilling contributes to conditioning “by shear physical intensity” and match these skills to the game.

It’s not enough for a boxer, for example, to drill with his five basic punches (jab, cross, hook, uppercut and overhand) for his entire career, he must also “scrutinize each drill to see if it correlates with the game in question — if not, we may be wasting precious conditioning and drilling time”

Children learn how to handle conflict and bullying from their siblings. How brothers and sisters relate to each other can serve as a “training ground for bullying, deviancy and aggression through social learning processes or behavioral patterns that can be reinforced across contexts.”How kids interact with each other at home, positvely or negatively, carries over into how they interact at school.

Studies show that bullying and victimization is as strong at home as it is in school. If siblings get along well they tend to interact with respect and kindness at school. If they don’t get along there’s a good chance they’ll either become bullies or victims at school. But a child who fights back at home is not likely to fight back at school for fear of losing a relationship.

Parents must:

pay close attention to sibling relationships;

serve as a mediator to prevent a conflict from escalating;

get involved in conversations when relationships between children seem negative and combative;

and monitor their own behavior setting a high standard of positive social interaction.

Released in the U.S. on Friday, August 23, 2013, the new film “The Grandmaster” is a stunning work of art of staggering beauty. It’s the tale of Ip Man the martial arts master who near the end of his life trained the legendary Bruce Lee.

The photography is rigorous and exquisite. The fight scenes are a fluid ballet of movement shifting back and forth from slow motion to fast motion. Pauses detail the intricate hand motions of the varying fighting styles. Interior scenes display bronze-hued lighting, and exterior scenes display a cinematic study in black and white. An intense night fight on a train platform uses images of swirling smoke, steam, and snow to vividly and artistically illuminate the battle for superiority between the varying martial arts styles.

This movie is sure to go down in history as an artistic masterpiece for it’s display of martial arts and for its stunning cinematography.
