Black Belt magazine tells the story of Gichin Funakoshi, the man who popularized shotokan karate. The man started out as a weak and sickly boy whose parents tried to help him by bringing him to a karate master.
Born in 1861 Shuri in Okinawa, he studied karate in primary school, but didn’t show it to the world until 1931. He gave his first public demonstration of karate in 1917 Tokyo Japan.
He believed and taught that kata was the secret to becoming skilled in karate.
