Autism is on the rise. Kids who suffer autism are finding help with karate.
ATA Martial Arts Owner Theresa Anderson not only believes in kids with autism, she incorporates them into the classes with other kids who have no disabilities. “[T]he key to teaching kids with any kind of disability: we don’t treat them different and they really excel in that way,” says Anderson.
One boy in her class has both Asperger’s and ADHD. His mother attests that her son, ever since starting karate classes, has improved his grades at school and is able to make friends when he couldn’t before. She says the classes teach him more than self-defense. He is learning discipline, good manners, and self-respect.
