Parent encouragement led this Tae Kwon Do kid to become a world medalist. “I just thought I was going to be a power ranger,” says Joel Garcia, 12-year-old world medalist who placed third in his age group one week ago at the international meet in Arkansas. “Then when this opportunity came up, I was just like woah – I had had no idea that this was going to happen.”
Earning the medal took a lot of time and dedication. “At some point, I was just like I don’t want to do it anymore,” Joel said, “but my parents kept on pushing me and pushing me, so they’re the reason that I’m actually going worldwide.”
Says Joel Garcia’s father: “If you stick to it, you’ll get to where you want to be.”
