Karate and other activities teach kids perseverance

Columnist Solomon Brenner discusses ways to teach your child perseverance, a life skill absolutely vital to success, and knowing when quitting, a rarity, is appropriate. Some children attending action karate classes experience doubts in their abilities or fear of physical pain.

Brenner explains that when a child wants to quit a valuable skill like karate parents can use this opportunity to talk to the child about perseverance, how it leads to eventual success and develops confidence and self-discipline. If a child expresses boredom with an activity this gives the signal that the child needs to be challenged differently. Brenner suggests talking to the child’s coach, counselor, or instructor to find ways to re-motivate the child.

In an unsafe environment involving potential for serious injury, one should consider quitting. Otherwise, quitting should never be an option.
